HSF Alumni explore"The Art of Enlightenment"
On June 11th 2011 members of the HSF Alumni Association
jointly visited the exhibition "The Art of Enlightenment"
in the newly reopened National Museum of China. Guided by
specialists involved in creating the exhibition, participants
explored the different theme sections including"Perspectives
of Knowledge", exemplifying the scientific curiosity
of that time, "The Birth of History", describing
the new historical consciousness and "Far and Near",
illustrating the novel attraction of exotic cultures - apparent
in depictions of an often idealized China. Other sections
focused on changing societal values, emancipation and the
development of a public sphere. Following a lecture on the
"making-of", members of the alumni association
thus had the change to further expand their knowledge about

An Introduction to "The Art of Enlightenment"
Is there an art of Enlightenment? An exhibition on display
at the soon to be reopened National Museum of China will
explore this question by tracing the influence of the ideas
of that era on fine arts by presenting more than 450 exhibits
in a display area spanning 2,700 square meters. "The
Art of Enlightenment", organized by an association
of major German museums, will attempt to visualize the intellectual
heritage that became the most defining for Western civilization.
On January 15th 2011 Dr. Cordula Bischoff, curator of the
exhibition, spoke at an alumni-event of the HSF and offered
vivid insights into the process of conceptualizing and setting-up
such an extensive exhibition, including problems arising
