Advancement of Women and Gender Equality

 

At the invitation of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) Prof. Ursula Männle, HSF Vice President and Member of Parliament, Barbara Stamm, President of the Bavarian State Parliament, and Emilia Müller, State Minister for Federal and European Affairs, visited China from June 20th to 25th, 2011. In Beijing, the female politicians spoke at a small-scale forum on "Advancement of Women and Gender Equality", where the participants, including ACWF Vice President Meng Xiaosi, discussed the development of women's right in China and Germany. In Gansu province delegation members had a chance to gain direct insights into vocational training measures as well as micro-credit programs for local women promoted by the ACWF, including a visit to a joint project in Gaotai. In Shanghai, Zhang Lili, President of the Shanghai Women's Federation, informed the delegation about recent steps to support female university graduates and promote a transfer of knowledge to rural areas. As Barbara Stamm stressed: "The protection of women's rights and economic empowerment must go hand in hand."

 
 
     

Social Change and Political Challenges

 

As part of an ongoing dialogue program the Central Party School and the Hanns Seidel Foundation jointly organized a conference on "Social Change and Political Challenges". In his presentation Prof. Oberreuter of the Academy for Civic Education Tutzingen described recent changes in the German political landscape, and talked about the challenges that declining voter loyalty, the development of a five-party-system as well as a mediatized democracy pose for policy-making. Professors Wang Changjiang, Zhu Lingjun and Gao Xinmin from the Central Party School provided insights into the development of grassroots-democracy and new channels for participation in China as well as problems arising in its implementation. Referees and attendants discussed the transformative effect that the introduction of market economy has on a society, above all the rising civil consciousness and demand for participation.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
     

HSF Alumni explore"The Art of Enlightenment"

 

On June 11th 2011 members of the HSF Alumni Association jointly visited the exhibition "The Art of Enlightenment" in the newly reopened National Museum of China. Guided by specialists involved in creating the exhibition, participants explored the different theme sections including"Perspectives of Knowledge", exemplifying the scientific curiosity of that time, "The Birth of History", describing the new historical consciousness and "Far and Near", illustrating the novel attraction of exotic cultures - apparent in depictions of an often idealized China. Other sections focused on changing societal values, emancipation and the development of a public sphere. Following a lecture on the "making-of", members of the alumni association thus had the change to further expand their knowledge about the thoughts and ideas of the era that marked the beginning of Western modernity.

 
 
     

An Introduction to "The Art of Enlightenment"

 

Is there an art of Enlightenment? An exhibition on display at the soon to be reopened National Museum of China will explore this question by tracing the influence of the ideas of that era on fine arts by presenting more than 450 exhibits in a display area spanning 2,700 square meters. "The Art of Enlightenment", organized by an association of major German museums, will attempt to visualize the intellectual heritage that became the most defining for Western civilization. On January 15th 2011 Dr. Cordula Bischoff, curator of the exhibition, spoke at an alumni-event of the HSF and offered vivid insights into the process of conceptualizing and setting-up such an extensive exhibition, including problems arising from the different cultural backgrounds and logistic challenges.

 
     

Social Challenges and New Developments in Criminal Law

 

On September 15th, 2010 the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Central Party School jointly organized an academic event on "Social Challenges and New Developments in Criminal Law". Prof. Dr. Bernd Schünemann from the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich discussed the topic "Do changes in modern industrial societies necessitate a new system of criminal procedure?". Prof. Dr. Zhao Yonghong from the Central Party School talked about "Recent developments of the Chinese criminal law and current challenges". Participants included professors and graduate students from the Central Party School.

 
 
     

Meeting of the HSF-Alumni Association in Shanghai

 

On September 18th and 19th, 2010 the Beijing Alumni Association of the Hanns Seidel Foundation met with Alumni from Shanghai to lend support to the upcoming establishment of the Shanghai Alumni Association. Together the alumni from both cities discussed the organizational structure and work of the Association but also enjoyed the chance to get to know each other and talk about their experiences living and studying in Germany. Dr. Michael Czepalla, Head of the Scholarship Department of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, also attended the event to help with the formation of the new Association. The highlight of the two-day event in Shanghai was the joint visit of the EXPO, with a special tour for the Alumni provided the German Pavilion.

 
 
     

Our Shared Historical Past - an Obstacle for a Common Future?

 

On September 4th and 5th, 2010 the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held an international conference on "Historical Reflection and the Process of Reconciliation in East Asia and Europe after World War II", supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Historians from East Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and the USA took part in the two-day conference and engaged in a critical and constructive dialogue on this conflict-laden topic.

 
 
     

Promoting Regional Development in Western China

 

"A harmonious society has to grow from the grassroots and we hope to contribute to this process through our education projects in Western China" said Christian Hegemer, Head of the Institute for International Cooperation of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, during his recent visit to Gansu and the Xinjiang Autonomous Region from May 18th to 24th, 2010. During his stay he had the chance to gain deeper insights in the current development of the vast network of vocational schools cooperating with the Hanns Seidel Foundation in China. On his visit to Gansu, Hegemer was accompanied by Sheng Jianxue, Deputy Director-General of the International Department of the Chinese Ministry of Education and Xi Ru, Head of the European Division.

 
 
     

A New Model of Rural Development in Shandong

 

In 1990 a model project in land consolidation and community management in villages was established in Nanzhanglou (Shandong province) in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the Bavarian State Government and the Technical University of Munich, that has continuously developed ever since. On May 19th and 20th, 2010 Prof. Dr. Holger Magel held by a workshop to promote the formation of a regional alliance of eleven villages to ensure a transfer of knowledge and to further promote a sustainable regional development.

 
 
     

5th Annual Meeting of the Research Group for Intercultural German Studies

 

The 5th annual meeting of the Research Group for Intercultural German Studies in China was held at the University of Qingdao on May 21st to 23rd, 2010. It was supported by the Shandong Chinese-German Academic Center at the University of Qingdao and the Hanns Seidel Foundation. A total of 70 participants attended the event and discussed new academic approaches in Cultural and German studies. All presentations were related the question that served as the theme for the conferece: "How do we define the conveyance of language and culture in the context of our work in China?"

 
 
     

25th Anniversary of the Vocational Training Center Shanghai


On May 8th, 2010 the Vocational Training Center Shanghai - a Sino-German cooperation project for vocational education - celebrated its 25th anniversary together with its long-standing partners and teachers that played a vital role in establishing and developing the education facility. Project partners include the Shanghai Education Commission, the state-owned Shanghai Electronics and Instrumentation Group Holding Company as well as the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Also among the attendants were representatives from politics and commerce, as the Vocational Training Center Shanghai cooperates with a wide range of Chinese and German companies.

 
 
     

Bavarian Prime Minister Seehofer visits China

 

Horst Seehofer, Bavarian prime minister and Chairman of the Christian Social Union visited China between April 26th and 30th. As part of his first delegation to China he met with high-ranking politicians like Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Beijing as well representatives from different universities and the industry. During his stay Seehofer, who recently joined the board of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), had a chance to meet members of the Chinese HSF Alumni Association. In Qingdao he also gained insight in the HSF and DAAD cooperation project with the German department of the University of Qingdao and the Master and Bachelor programs it offers in intercultural German studies. 

 
     

Globalization, Democracy and the Welfare State

 

Together with the Center for German Studies (ZDS) the Hanns Seidel Foundation invited participants to a public event at Beijing University where professor Elmar Rieger gave a presentation on “Globalization, Democracy and the Welfare State”, which was followed by a discussion. Rieger talked about the relationship between globalization and social security systems (also see previous entry) and further examined the function of democratic systems in promoting and institutionalizing social welfare as well as possible long-term impacts on the global community should there be are widespread inadequacies in that sector.

In cooperation with the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China the Hanns Seidel Foundation organized a workshop on March 19th 2010 in Beijing. Researchers from Germany and the Central Party School offered their perspectives on "Globalization and Social Welfare - the development of social protection in China."

30 Years of Chinese-German Cooperation in Vocational Training

 

"Cooperation, Development and New Perspectives" was the theme of a forum to celebrate "30 Years of Chinese-German cooperation in vocational training" on November 29th and 30th in Beijing. Among the participants invited by the Ministry of Education (MoE) where representatives of departments and educational institutions from all over China and from Chinese and German ministries, but also representatives from organizations that have been actively engaged in vocational education in China like the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the GTZ and InWEnt as well as German enterprises.

Exchanges of Views with Chinese Partners

 

During his recent stay in China Christian J. Hegemer, Head of the Institute for International Contact and Cooperation of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) enjoyed the chance to meet with partners of the HSF in China for multifaceted exchanges of views. During the meeting with Chen Haosu, Chairman of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the focus was on current political developments. At the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Mr. Hegemer and Zhang Zhongjun, Deputy Director of the General Affairs Office talked about the positive development of the ongoing academic exchange between the Central Party School and the Foundation. With Wu Haiyang, director of the Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Center of the Ministry of Land and Resources, Mr. Hegemer discussed upcoming projects and an extension of the scope of the cooperation.

 
 
     
Germany and Japan after the Second Word War: Coming to terms with History

On October 17th and 18th, 2009 a conference was held in Beijing on “Germany and Japan after the Second Word War: Coming to terms with History”. Joint organizers were the Institute for World History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the Chinese Research Association for German History, the Chinese Research Association for Japanese History and the Hanns Seidel Foundation. More than 40 scientists from the CASS and Chinese universities took part in this event as well as guests from Japan and Germany.
 
 
     

German Parliamentary Elections 2009

 

In the run-up to the German parliamentary elections 2009 (Bundestagswahl) the Alumni Association of the Hanns Seidel Foundation co-organized an event with the Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA) on September 19th, 2009. Topics of the presentation and the discussion included the changing political landscape in Germany and underlying societal tendencies as well as new challenges for political parties in redefining themselves and in ensuring voter loyalty.

 
 
     

Educational Partnership between Pingdu and Datong

 

In the past year a close educational partnership was formed between the Vocational Training Center Pingdu in the Eastern Shandong province and the Datong Vocational School in the Western Qinghai province. In 2009 and 2010 more than 30 participants will take part in a special training program, among them are students from the Hui and Tu minorities as well as Mongolians and Tibetans.

 
     

Environmental Protection - A Social Challenge

 

” Not only did we learn more about different approaches to CO2 reduction and energy efficient reconstruction of buildings, we also gained valuable insights into the social environments and day-to-day life” stated Feng Zuoku, vice president of the CPAFFC. He was the head of a delegation of Chinese parliamentarians who visited Germany from June 28 th to July 5 th 2009. The main topic was environmental protection with a focus on energy efficient building techniques, but also included political talks with German parliamentarians.

A Visit in Gansu Province

 

"We want to be actively involved in regions where support is needed," said Chief Executive Dr. Peter Witterauf at the end of his stay in Gansu, one of Chinas structurally weakest provinces. During his visit Dr. Witterauf enjoyed the chance to personally examine the growing network of vocational schools working together with the Hanns Seidel Foundation that developed in the past 10 years. Regular training measures for teachers and school management are offered to improve the quality of vocational training and thus the job prospects of young people from rural areas.

 
 
     

10 Years of Cooperation

 

"Justice in modern societies" was the theme of an academic get together on June 11 th, 2009 to celebrate 10 years of cooperation between the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) and the China Central Party School (CPS). Dr. Peter Witterauf, Chief Executive of the HSF stressed in his speech that the long-standing academic discourse is an important pillar in Sino-German relations. Vice-President of the CPS Prof. Dr. Shi Taifeng, who personally signed the first cooperation agreement in Munich, emphasized that differences between countries should form no obstacle to cooperation and dialogue.

 
 
     

Symposium: Land Consolidation and Land Development

 

From Mai 18th to May 20th 2009 the Chinese-German Symposium on land consolidation and land development was held in Qingdao and Qingzhou, Shandong. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR), Renmin University, the Technical University of Munich and the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

As part of the ongoing program for academic exchange, the Hanns Seidel Foundation in cooperation with the Central China Party School (CPS) organized a small-scale conference. The topic of the event held on March 27 th was “Chinas future development and the world economic crisis.”

From December 3rd to 10th 2008, a delegation of professors from the Central Party School (CPS) visited the Federal Republic of Germany at the invitation of the Hanns Seidel Foundation. The core theme of the visit, which included stop-overs in Berlin , Bamberg and Munich , was “Globalization and Demographic Change – New Challenges to the Welfare State.”

Vocational education: likewise a topic for „Germany and China – moving ahead together”

 

The second stop for the event series „Germany and China – moving ahead together“ was Chongqing. It was the wish of the municipality Chongqing to put the topic vocational education on the agenda. Hence, the 1-day conference on „Chinese-German cooperation in vocational education – achievements, open questions and future strategies” was held at the conference pavilion in the Germany Esplanade on 14 May 2008.

President of Bavarian Parliament visits Shandong

 

On invitation of the partner province Shandong the President of the Bavarian Parliament and Vice Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation Alois Glück visited China from April 28th – May 3rd, 2008. In talks with government representatives he was informed about current developments in Shandong. During visits to regional projects of the Hanns Seidel Foundation he gained direct insights into the various cooperations of the foundation in China.

Meeting of scholarship holders in Sichuan

 

On 10 April 2008 a meeting of scholarship holders of the Hanns Seidel Foundation took place at the Sichuan Agriculture University in Yaan. There are 20 scholarship holders in Sichuan, half of them study at the University in Yaan 122 km southwest of Chengdu, whearas the other half is enrolled at the Xichang College in southern Sichuan.
