Meeting the German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel in Beijing

Within the scope of her first state visit to China, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel met with Gu Xiulian, President of the All China Women's Federation (ACWF) and Vice President of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The ACWF excitedly watched Merkel's election in the past year in hopes of meeting her one day.

On 22 May 2006 , the meeting finally took place during a reception at the residence of the German ambassador to China. Gu Xiulian introduced the activities of ACWF, and the German Chancellor enquired for the contacts of ACWF in Germany.

The German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel also met with representatives of German political foundations. On the right she is pictured with Ulla Bekel from the Hanns Seidel Foundation and Winfried Jung from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Ulla Bekel, head of the Hanns Seidel Foundations Beijing Office, gave the German Chancellor a short overview about the work of the foundation in China .
