On 31 October 2007, the Bavarian State Minister of Science, Research and Arts Dr. Thomas Goppe and the Vice Governor of Shandong Province Huang Sheng opened the Chinese-German Higher Education Center Shandong which is attached to the University of Qingdao. „This institution is another milestone in the long lasting partnership between Shandong Province and Bavaria”, said State Minister Goppel.
Thus the Bavarian Higher Education Center at the University of Bayreuth, established in April 2007, has gotten a counterpart in China. Both institutions aim at the promotion and intensification of the cooperation between universities and research centers in Bavaria and in Shandong province in PR China. The Bavarian State Minister of Science, Research and Arts Dr. Thomas Goppel emphasized that “the various existing contacts will thus be strengthened through enhanced networking, new contacts will be established and potential partners will be brought together.”
Currently, there are 2800 students enrolled in 83 university partnership programs between Bavaria and China. During the celebration a cooperation memorandum between the two Higher Education Centers was signed by State Minister Dr. Goppel and the Vice Governor of Shandong Province, in charge of education, Huang Sheng. The Hanns Seidel Foundation supports the Chinese-German Higher Education Center at the university of Qingdao through manpower and financial inputs. With the help of the foundation a degree course “Intercurltural German Studies” is under development. In Beijing, State Minister Dr. Goppel, met up with Zhou Ji, Minister of the Ministry of Education, and Wu Qidi, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education of PR China, in order to exchange views. The talk focussed on university cooperations between Bavaria and China, the development of the Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences in Shanghai, a cooperation project between the Ministry of Education of PR China and the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
