25th anniversary of Hanns Seidel Foundation in China

– a dialogue of friendship and mutual respect

On occasion of the 25th anniversary of Hanns Seidel Foundation's development cooperation with China, a celebration was held on 18 November 2005 in Beijing, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education of PR China (MoE) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF). Participants comprised representatives and celebrities of various organizations, supporters to the work of HSF over the past 25 years, and last but not least, the current German project managers and their Chinese counterparts.

Education was the predominant topic of the day. Prof. Dr. Wu Qidi, Vice Minister of the MoE, delivered a speech on „China's Education Policies in the 21st Century”, and the former Minister of the State Bavaria and Chairman of HSF, Dr h.c. mult. Hans Zehetmair, focused in his speech on „Education against the backdrop of diverse cultures, societies and global challenges“. Both speakers stressed the essential role of education as necessary prerequisite to enabling people to master change and come up with creative solutions to problems. The unprecedented speed of social change requires life-long-learning.

The Vice president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Mr. Chen Yongchang, and the German ambassador to China, Dr. Volker Stanzel , delivered opening speeches. The Vice General Manager of the Hanns Seidel Foundation and Head of the Department for International Contact and Cooperation, Dr. Rainer Gepperth , one of the initiators and founders of the relations with China, enlightened the guests on the development of Hanns Seidel Foundation's activities in China over the past 25 years. In this context he praised the good cooperation between the Hanns Seidel Foundation and China.

Within the scope of the anniversary celebration, various agreements were signed, e.g. a skeleton agreement with the Ministry of Education of PR China and cooperation agreements with the Education Commissions of the provinces Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang. A further cooperation agreement was signed with the longest-standing partner of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in China, the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
